Upon establishment in 1961, GG+A’s first client was a private, independent school. Moving into the 1970s, when public universities in the United States began to emerge as fundraising powerhouses, GG+A was selected as counsel for one of the earliest philanthropic campaigns in higher education. Since that time, the firm has established itself as the international leader in providing counsel on all aspects of fundraising for educational institutions worldwide, from large research universities to small private schools.

Philanthropy: Needs and Challenges in Education

Since the 1970s, educational institutions in the US have experienced declines in public funding, making them increasingly reliant on private philanthropic support to cover operating costs. Fiscal challenges have developed in many other countries, as well, creating similar difficulties. Overall, the environment has become extremely complex. Private and public institutions are in heightened competition for philanthropic dollars and both sectors are experiencing increased competition—for students and tuition income—from the newer breeds of for-profit and online institutions. The key to a sustainable future lies in finding the means to successfully adapt to a changing and increasingly challenging fiscal environment. Defining a roadmap for the future is paramount.

GG+A understands the funding challenges of both private and public institutions, as well as their philanthropic opportunities. Educational institutions have broad and complex constituencies—students, alumni, administrators, faculty, staff, parents, friends, foundations, corporations, and volunteers—creating an intricate social network that links them to their environment. While this network includes prospective donors, leveraging their relationships with internal personnel to effectively connect with them and optimize fundraising success requires rigorous research, collaboration, and planning.
