Pioneering Cambridge Campaign reaches record US $2 billion

The University of Cambridge today announced it has raised more than US$2.0 billion (£1.17 billion) during the course of its 800th Anniversary Campaign, the largest fundraising total ever announced by a European university. Stockton College Launches Campaign

“You Make the Difference, the Campaign for Stockton College,” is officially underway. Stockton’s first-ever comprehensive giving campaign was announced today by College President Herman J. USC to Launch Largest Fundraising Campaign in Higher Education History

With the goal of advancing its academic vision and priorities, USC will launch on Sept. 15 the most ambitious fundraising campaign in the history of higher education.

The Campaign for the University of Southern California seeks to raise $6 billion, half to augment its endowment in support of faculty and students and half to provide immediate support for academic priorities, capital projects and infrastructure. To date, the university has raised more than $1 billion toward the $6 billion goal and anticipates reaching or exceeding its goal within seven years.  See the story at the USC website

$80 Million Gift Will Improve 3 Buildings at Duke

An $80 million gift from the Duke Endowment will be used to enhance a Duke University student center and bring two of its historic performance venues up to modern-day standards, school officials said Monday.The donation is the largest gift ever awarded by the Charlotte, N.C.-based Duke Endowment, which donates money to schools, churches and other causes. The philanthropic fund was started by the family for which the university is named, but remains a separate entity from the school and its endowment. See the story in Business Week

Notre Dame Campaign Raises $2+ Billion

The University of Notre Dame has become the first university without the powerful gift-giving attraction of a medical school to surpass $2 billion in a traditional seven-year capital campaign.

Titled the “Spirit of Notre Dame,” the campaign raised $2.014 billion in the seven-year span that ended June 30 – 134 percent of the $1.5 billion goal. The fund-raising effort also was the largest in the history of Catholic higher education, surpassing the $1.061 billion raised in the University’s “Generations” campaign that ended in December 2000. Couple Donates $110 Million for USC Undergraduate Scholarships

The University of Southern California will announce Wednesday a $110-million donation for scholarships from a Colorado couple who made a fortune in the oil and gas industry. Couple to Give Record $200-million Gift to USC

The University of Southern California will announce Wednesday its largest donation ever, a $200-million gift from alumnus David Dornsife, the chairman of a large steel fabricating company, and his wife, Dana.The Dornsifes' donation will go to USC's College of Letters, Arts and Sciences, the university's biggest academic unit, without restrictions on how it should be spent. It is expected to support faculty hiring, research and fellowships and be especially useful for the humanities and social sciences, which receive less funding than the sciences from federal and private sources. Emory Receives $14.4 Million from Alumnus

An Emory University program that helps students from low- and middle-income families afford college received some aid itself through a $14.4 million gift from an alumnus. UCLA to Receive $200 Million Gift from the Lincy Foundation

The University of California at Los Angeles announced that it will receive a $200 million gift from the Lincy Foundation. The private foundation, founded by Kirk Kerkorian, is transferring all of its assets and charitable programs in progress to UCLA. This gift will be used to establish The Dream Fund, which will be part of and administered by the UCLA Foundation, and will support UCLA scholarships and research, as well as the work of outside non-profit groups. The gift comes at a time when the University of California system has been struggling with budget cuts of $500 million, and UCLA and the Lincy Foundation hope that the Dream Fund will encourage other private foundations, individuals, and businesses to donate to the institution. See the story on the UCLA web site
