Chairman in Europe

William Squire joined GG+A in 1996, following more than 30 years of government, philanthropic and diplomatic service across five continents. On behalf of the firm, he has served academic and cultural nonprofits throughout the United Kingdom, Europe and the Middle East. He is fluent in French and also has facility with Rumanian, German and Hausa.

Bill’s fundraising career began with his appointment as the first development director for Cambridge University in 1988. He pioneered the University’s first fundraising effort in the UK and abroad, helping to raise £160 million toward the campaign’s 10-year goal of £250 million. He also served as chairman of the trustees of CASE Europe in the mid 1990s. He was additionally a fellow of Wolfson College, Cambridge University for six years.

Previously, Bill spent more than three decades in the diplomatic service for the United Kingdom. During this time, he served as British ambassador to both Israel and Senegal, worked at the United Nations as the British spokesman to the press, and held posts in Bangkok, Bucharest and Washington, DC on behalf of Her Majesty’s Diplomatic Service.

Bill received his bachelor’s degree in modern languages at St John’s College at the University of Oxford, spent a year of post-graduate study at the College of Europe in Bruges, Belgium, and earned a doctorate in international relations from the University of London.
