John Rick III is a Senior Vice President in the UK/Global practice area at GG+A. With more than 40 years of experience as a thought leader, strategic thinker, problem solver, planner, and communicator, John is skilled at crafting comprehensive fundraising strategies that engage prospects and produce sustainable growth. He works collaboratively with the firm's consultants to plan, execute, and deliver solutions and strategic consulting in the UK and European markets, ensuring that client deliverables meet the highest standards of quality, and providing strategic direction for the firm.
Prior to joining GG+A, John served as a senior officer or consultant to clients in the United States, the United Kingdom, and the European Union, and has been principal and managing director of his own fundraising firm for nearly 30 years. His expertise includes designing capital campaigns for education, cultural, church, and other faith-based institutions; as well as facilitating strategic thinking programs, conducting feasibility and planning studies, authoring case statements, developing program assessments, creating comprehensive communications and marketing plans, and more.
Previously, John also served as a senior development officer at Harvard University and Acting Vice President of Advancement at Darden Graduate Business School at the University of Virginia. He has raised hundreds of millions of dollars for organizations that include cathedrals, major churches, universities and independent schools in the U.S., U.K. and E.U. – such as the Jackson, Michigan YMCA (for which he raised $14 million in 15 months), and St. Louis University High School, where as Vice President of Advancement, he received a CASE Bronze Award.
Through the years, John has served as a trustee for numerous organizations, most notably as a charter trustee for more than 50 years on the University of Virginia’s Gray-Carrington Foundation. His many honors include the title of Officer, Order of St. John, conferred by HM Queen Elizabeth II; and Knight Commander, Order of Savoy, conferred by HRH Prince Victor Emmanuel. He is a member of the Guild of Freeman of the City of London, and an ordained Episcopal/Anglican clergyman.
John received his Bachelor of Arts (A.B.) from Washington University in St. Louis, his Bachelor of Divinity (B.D.) from Berkeley Divinity School at Yale University, his Master of Business Administration (M.B.A.) from the University of Virginia, and his Master of Divinity (M.Div.) from Yale University.
