Marsha A. Chandler, Consulting Vice President, brings more than 25 years of experience as an academic leader and administrator. Until recently, Marsha served as the Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer of the Salk Institute for Biological Studies in La Jolla, California, where she successfully designed and implemented progressive, long-term strategies to capitalize on emerging opportunities in a changing professional and financial environment.
From 2007 to 2015, Marsha served as the Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer of the Salk Institute for Biological Studies. In this position, she provided strategic leadership and management of the fiscal and administrative functions of the Institute, which comprises approximately 870 researchers and 230 administrative personnel. Marsha supervised the Vice Presidents for Scientific Services, Academic and Administrative Services, Development and Communication, the Chief Financial Officer, the General Counsel, the Executive Director of Core Research Facilities, and the Executive Director of the Office of Technology Development. She worked closely with the Board of Trustees, President, and faculty as well as the senior administrative leadership. The Salk Institute flourished under her leadership, generating and sustaining numerous research grants, faculty honors and awards, improved quality of faculty and senior administrative recruitment, reinforced state-of-the-art scientific core facilities, improved managerial and business practices, and strong philanthropic support.
Prior to working with the Salk Institute, Marsha served as Senior Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs at the University of California, San Diego (UCSD). As UCSD's Chief Academic Officer (Provost), she was responsible for the policies and decisions relating to all academic programs and faculty appointments and performance, including the Schools of Arts and Science, the Graduate School, Medicine, Engineering, Management, International Relations and Pacific Studies, and Pharmaceutical Science. From 1990 to 1997, she was Dean of Arts and Science, the largest division at the University of Toronto.
Marsha has held trustee and advisory positions in numerous organizations, including: Mount Sinai Hospital and Health Center (Toronto), the Canadian Institute for Advanced Research, the Board of Directors of the San Diego Regional Economic Development Corporation, La Jolla Playhouse, and the San Diego Opera. Currently, she is a trustee of the American University in Paris and is on the Board of Directors of Biocept, Inc. (NASDAQ: BIOC), a commercial-stage oncology diagnostics company. Most recently, Marsha joined the Advisory Board of Succession Equity Partners.
Marsha has a doctorate in public policy and political science from The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. In 2004, she completed the Advanced Management Program at Harvard University Business School. Marsha is an accomplished scholar of political economy and comparative public policy and is a Fellow of the prestigious Royal Society of Canada, the highest academic honor bestowed in that country. Since joining GG+A, Marsha has served Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago.
