Mary Carole Starke

Consulting Vice President

Advancement Services must be an integral part of an Advancement program. Support of fundraising, engagement and communications activities is key to the success of a program. We work with clients to embed this philosophy into the culture of the organization and to provide the Advancement Services team with the tools and resources necessary to support programmatic activities and be a partner in strategic decision making.

Mary Carole Starke serves as Consulting Vice President for Advancement Services at GG+A, in addition to her role as Associate Vice President for Operations at Vassar College. Prior to her current role, she was the Director of Development for Operations, Director of Development Information and Research and Director of Donor Planning at Vassar College. She is a member of the Council for Advancement and Support of Education (CASE) and the Association of Advancement Services Professionals (AASP). She was a faculty member for the CASE Summer Institute for Advancement Services for three years (2013–2015).

Her current role, at Vassar College, includes overseeing prospect development and research, prospect management, biographical and gift recording, reporting, and information services, as well as collaborating with her colleagues at the senior level on strategic planning and identifying and implementing technology and support needs. She works closely with the Finance office to ensure compliance with IRS rules and regulations and with the campus Information Technology team to ensure data security and compliance. She is a member of the College’s data governance   committee and works closely with colleagues to implement campus-wide data integrity policies and procedures.  She is currently overseeing the process of purchasing and implementing a new constituent relationship management (CRM) system for Advancement.

During her service to Vassar, Mary Carole managed the implementation of the College’s online community and the creation of the alumni/development data marts used for reporting. She coordinated the implementation of a digital imaging system, spearheaded the purchase and use of fundraising analytics software, and managed the department’s fundraising and marketing software. Mary Carole provides guidance to staff regarding the development of department-wide policies and procedures and created a comprehensive gift acceptance policy. She coordinates management of the advancement database and office reporting needs and technology. In her role as Associate Campaign Director, she was responsible for managing campaign operations, including campaign planning, staffing, reporting, and budget oversight.

Prior to joining the Department of Development at Vassar, Mary Carole was a Senior Researcher at Ithaca College, where she identified, researched, and tracked major prospects for the president, vice president, corporate and foundation relations staff, and major gifts staff. As a research assistant at Gallaudet University, Mary Carole researched educational achievement and transition patterns of hearing-impaired children throughout the United States.

Mary Carole received a bachelor’s degree from Elmira College and a master’s degree from the University of Maryland.
