In honor of Black History Month, GG+A is celebrating members of our team and the ways that they, as Black Americans, enrich our community with their insights and perspectives. Today, Leeyah Rassu, Consulting Associate.
Who are your greatest influences? Do you have any role models?
I would have to say my boss from my time serving with AmeriCorps VISTA at a small education nonprofit. I had just graduated college and was entering the professional world for the first time, and my boss was an attorney who took time off from her career to run this organization. She was a Black woman coming into a position that dealt with majority white leaders and partners. Despite that, she never wavered, and she never changed herself to suit others – she was successful just as she was.
Sometimes I have this feeling that I need to change myself in the workplace to be more palatable, and then I recall my former boss and how she never changed herself to please others. Meeting and learning from her has had such an impact on my career.
What is the best advice you have ever received? What are some words of wisdom that inspire you?
“Go where you’re wanted.” There can be certain spaces where no warmth or kindness is extended to you, and attempting to establish yourself in such hostile places can be mentally and physically exhausting. Be more discerning, know your limits, and find where you can flourish.
What do you value most about being a member of the Black community?
The camaraderie and support, especially professionally.
How has being a member of the Black community shaped you personally and professionally?
Feeling this undue pressure to represent all Black professionals has certainly been something that weighs on my mind, especially in a field where there’s a lack of diversity. I find myself having to mentally balance between focusing on myself, my abilities, and what I can accomplish, yet still creating and setting a path for others.
