Smithsonian announces $5 million gift from Michael Jordan to National Museum of African American History and Culture

The National Museum of African American History and Culture, a Smithsonian museum, announced that basketball legend Michael Jordan will donate $5 million to the museum, as well as a jersey he wore in a 1996 NBA finals game for the permanent collection.

To honor his generosity, a portion of the Sports Gallery will be named “The Michael Jordan Hall: Game Changers.”

The National Museum of African American History and Culture was established by an Act of Congress that was signed into law by George W. Bush in 2003, with groundbreaking beginning in 2012. The museum is set to open on September 24, 2016 after a dedication ceremony in which President Obama will participate.
