Rice University receives $4.1 million estate gift for Jewish Studies, Shepherd School

Rice University has received a gift of more than $4.1 million from the estate of the late Samuel W. and Goldye Marian Spain to the university’s Program in Jewish Studies and the Shepherd School of Music.

The majority of the gift, $3.6 million, will go to the Program in Jewish Studies in the School of Humanities to create a faculty chair to be held by a senior faculty member, a postdoctoral fellowship, and other outreach programs in the field of Jewish studies. The Shepherd School of Music will receive more than $500,000 geared toward supporting opera education and performance, including coaching in voice and stagecraft and scholarships for music and performance.
